Let’s talk about ACA.

Understanding ACA coverage

What is the ACA?

The Affordable Care Act created the health insurance marketplace, where individuals and families can shop for coverage. Plans cover essential health benefits like doctor visits, hospital care, and prescriptions.

Who can enroll?

Most people who don’t have coverage through an employer, Medicaid, or Medicare can shop the marketplace. Many families qualify for help paying their monthly premium based on household size and income.

When can I sign up?

There is an annual open enrollment period, and certain life events — like losing other coverage, moving, getting married, or having a baby — can open a special enrollment period. Jordy can help you find out which applies to you.

How do subsidies work?

Premium tax credits can lower what you pay each month, and some plans also lower your out-of-pocket costs. What you qualify for depends on your household and income — bring your questions and Jordy will walk through it with you.

What to look at when comparing coverage

A monthly premium is only one part of the picture. Ask about these details before choosing a plan.

Your doctors and hospitals

Check the plan’s provider network rather than assuming your current care team is included.

Prescription costs

Compare each plan’s drug list, pharmacy network, and your estimated costs for medications you take.

The full cost

Look beyond the premium at deductibles, copays, coinsurance, and the out-of-pocket maximum.

Enrollment timing

Find out whether open enrollment or a qualifying life event gives you a window to sign up.

Helpful to have on hand

  • Names of your doctors and preferred hospitals
  • A list of prescriptions you take
  • An estimate of household income and household size

Common ACA questions

Can I keep my doctor?

Each plan has its own network of doctors and hospitals. Bring your doctor’s name and Jordy can help you check which plans include them.

What if my income changes during the year?

Changes in income can affect the help you receive with your premium. It’s a good idea to report changes — Jordy can explain how.

Are prescriptions covered?

Marketplace plans cover prescription drugs, but each plan’s list of covered medications is different. Bring your medication list to your conversation.

What if I missed open enrollment?

You may still qualify for a special enrollment period after certain life events. Call and ask — it costs nothing to find out.

Can I get help in Spanish?

Yes. Every conversation with Jordy can happen in English or Spanish.
